On May 22, 2023, a pro-Islamic State (ISIS) media outlet that shares information security tips on the pro-ISIS Rocket.Chat server posted a link to an article discussing the security features of the Session messaging app, in which it warns ISIS supporters against using it, due to suspicion that the traffic on the app is monitored by intelligence and security elements.
The article mentions that the Session headquarters are based in Australia which is a country with a "bad reputation" regarding issues of privacy and data security. This is primarily because the laws of the country oblige the communication and technology companies to store communications data and to make it available to intelligence and security bodies for the purpose of thwarting crime and terrorist activity. The outlet advises ISIS supporters who nevertheless choose to use the app to take every precaution to conceal their identity.
