On January 4, 2016, Russian Communications Minister Nikolai Nikiforov's Instagram account was hacked by the Turkish hacker group The Bortecine Cyber Team, who used it to post images of Turkish flags, warplanes, and Turkey's founding father, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. The hack likely took place on the backdrop of Russian-Turkish tensions over Syria, which culminated in Turkey shooting down a Russian bomber near the Syria-Turkey border in November 2015.
