On July 28, 2016, the Register reported that a royal edict from UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al-Nahyan may have effectively made it illegal for anyone in the country to use a virtual private network (VPN) or a secure proxy service. The penalty for doing so is now jail time and fines between 500,000 and 2,000,000 UAE dirham (between US$136,130 and $544,521). The statement was described as "ambiguous and technologically illiterate," barring the use of systems that can hide the fact that you are committing a crime or covering one up.
