Following are excerpts from a public address delivered by Muhammad Ali Al-Sabouni, president of the Association of Syrian Scholars, which aired on Al-Jazeera TV on July 12, 2011:
Muhammad Ali Al-Sabouni: Gentlemen, we are ready for dialogue [with the regime], with one precondition: that the president issue a decree disbanding the Socialist Ba'th Party, which brought misery and tragedy upon him and his group. He should state in the decree that anyone who is a member of the Socialist Ba'th Party from this day on is sentenced to death. That way, justice will prevail among the people.
