Beirut-based Iranian Academic Mohammad Gharavi said in an August 7, 2024 show on Al-Manar TV (Hizbullah-Lebanon) that Iran's most important strategic goal is to obtain nuclear deterrence capabilities. He explained that Iran wants to be able to say that they can obtain nuclear capabilities with the "push of a button." Gharavi confirmed that enriching uranium to 60% is tantamount to this, but Iran still needs to reach the stage of having missiles that can carry nuclear bombs and the technology to protect them. He continued to say that Iran cannot reveal all its cards now, but Israel needs to know that it has plans and means of deterrence and that "ultimately, nuclear power is only deterred by nuclear power."

Gharavi: "Regardless of how many martyrs we need to sacrifice, Iran's important goal is to obtain nuclear deterrence capability. I am not saying that Iran strives to obtain a nuclear bomb. Iran wants to say to the world: We have become a nuclear country, and we can obtain nuclear weapons with the push of a button. Iran's nuclear capabilities and knowledge..."

Interviewer: "Enriching uranium to over 60% is not tantamount to reaching the button stage?"

Gharavi: "That is true. The nuclear capability is there, but the stage of having a missile capable of carrying that bomb still remains, as well as the technology to protect the bomb. Iran needs to master all these scientific aspects, in order to become a nuclear country.

"This is why when some of our leaders in Iran talk about retaliating 'in the right place and at the right time,' they want to... Look, today's Iran is different than the Iran of ten years ago, and it will be different ten years from now. Therefore, we do not have to reveal all our cards now, but the Israeli enemy needs to know we have plans and means of deterrence, but ultimately, nuclear power is only deterred by nuclear power."
