In a Beirut interview on October 9, 2024, Khaled Barakat, a Canadian citizen and member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) leadership, discussed Palestinian activism in the West following the October 7 Al-Aqsa Flood attack. Barakat, who is currently based in Beirut, was interviewed by Laith Marouf, a Beirut-based journalist and former Canadian government “anti-racism trainer.” Marouf asked Barakat to justify the attack, which he referred to as “the great October 7 Al-Aqsa Flood” and “the greatest jailbreak in history.” Barakat responded by claiming that the “entire Zionist project is collapsing.”

During the discussion, Barakat and Marouf also talked about the slogan “from the River to the Sea, Palestine will be free,” used by the younger generation of the Palestinian diaspora. Barakat explained that the slogan is more than just a chant; it represents a plan to dismantle and uproot Israel. He added that a two-state solution would mark the death of the Palestinian cause and emphasized that Palestinian activism in the diaspora is an “integral part of the national liberation movement in Palestine.”

Marouf concluded the conversation by expressing hope that the two men would one day pray together in a liberated Jerusalem, carrying the martyrs, including the body of Hizbullah leader Hassan Nasrallah, to be buried there. The interview was part of Marouf’s show Wartime Café and was uploaded to Marouf’s FreePalestine TV channel on Rumble. On October 15, 2024, Barakat was designated by the U.S. government as a member of the leadership of PFLP, and Samidoun, an organization linked to him, was also placed on the terror lists of both the U.S. and Canada. Barakat’s wife, Charlotte Kates, the international coordinator of Samidoun, is under investigation by Vancouver law enforcement for hate speech. For more about Laith Marouf and his termination from the government position, see MEMRI TV special dispatch no 10348.

Laith Marouf: "We are one year from the great October 7 Al-Aqsa Flood. Al-Aqsa Flood was launched to free the Palestinian prisoners of war.

[...]

"Explain about the need to focus on our prisoners and why it was such a just action – October 7."

[...]

Khaled Barakat: "The entire Zionist project is collapsing, and the struggle of the prisoners is showing – in so many ways – what kind of a system Israel is all about."

Marouf: "One year before [October 7], we had the amazing jailbreak..."

Barakat: "Yes."

Marouf: "by the eight..."

Barakat: "the six..."

Marouf: "the six Palestinians from Gilboa Prison, and then less than a year later, we had the greatest jailbreak in history of the Palestinians breaking out of the extermination camp of Gaza."

Barakat: "Absolutely.

[...]

"Palestinians are teaching the entire world a lesson of steadfastness and how to fight back."

[...]

Marouf: "The Zionists are really scared of the words: 'From the River to the Sea.' In a way, they should be very scared of that."

[...]

Barakat: "The new generation of Palestine in the diaspora understand very well what this fight is all about. They understand that it is the Palestinian struggle for liberation and return, and when they say: 'Palestine will be free from the River to the Sea,' they actually mean it.

[...]

"They don't want to talk about a two-state solution. They know that a two-state solution is a recipe for death of our cause. They understand that Zionism should not exist, that Zionism is a form of racism, and that Israel needs to be dismantled and uprooted from our homeland.

[...]

"We are in an interim stage, [progressing] from resistance to revolution, because resistance is kind of like you are in the defensive. After October 7, we are moving towards the offensive, towards the revolution, meaning that this generation is going to launch its 'Diaspora Revolution,' because there are no other options. They are left with no options but to launch the Palestinian revolution in the diaspora, as an integral part of the national liberation movement in Palestine, because it is one movement, one people, one land. When we are talking about 'from the River to the Sea,' we are including the diaspora. When we're talking about '48 [borders] – the vast majority of Palestinians are from '48, because the diaspora is from [within the borders] of '48.

[...]

"The second most famous slogan after 'from the River to the Sea' is 'Palestine is Arab from the water [of the Mediterranean Sea] to the water [of the Jordan River].' This is important and people actually chant this, and it is important also to give that Arab identity to our struggle."

[...]

Marouf: "Inshallah, we will be praying in Jerusalem together. We will be carrying our martyrs, and even hopefully we will, inshallah, carry with us Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah to be buried in Jerusalem on the day of liberation that is coming near. Khaled Barakat, thank you very much for being with us. I hope you stay safe, here in Lebanon, in Beirut."
