Chinese Defense Minister Li Shangfu: We Will Sincerely Pursue Peaceful Reunification With Taiwan, But Do Not Renounce The Use Of Force; Our Military Will Not Hesitate To Defend Our Sovereignty, Territorial Integrity From Foreign Threats

Chinese Defense Minister Li Shangfu said in a speech at the 2023 Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore that it is an "indisputable fact" that mainland China and Taiwan are part of the same China and that the reunification of Taiwan with the mainland is "an overriding historical trend," is inevitable, and is the "aspiration" of the entire Chinese people. He criticized the Taiwanese DPP and accused "some" foreign forces of interfering in China's internal affairs with regard to the Taiwan issue, and he said that while China will sincerely pursue peaceful reunification with Taiwan, China makes no promise to renounce the use of force. He emphasized that the Chinese military will not hesitate to take action to safeguard China's sovereignty and "territorial integrity."
