Former editor-in-chief of Egypt’s Al-Ahram newspaper Osama Saraya said in an August 21, 2024 interview with Ten TV (Egypt) that Iran must be held accountable for "what it committed in the Middle East." He said that it has caused the proliferation of militias in several Arab countries. Saraya explained that half the Arab countries are in a state of collapse, mentioning Sudan, Libya, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, and Iraq. He further said that religious fundamentalism and militias have destroyed the Arab world.

Osama Saraya: "We must hold Iran accountable for what it committed in the Middle East.

"The Arab countries must declare that by deploying its militias in seven or eight Arab countries, it has seriously influenced the strategic situation of the Arab countries. We do not know what is happening in Yemen. There is hunger in Yemen. No journalists travel to Yemen, and there are no news agencies there to see the extent of Yemen's tragedies. The situation in Syria is very grave, but no one is talking about it. The situation in Lebanon, the economy... They are still unable to elect a president. The interim government is managed from abroad. The internal situation in Lebanon is extremely dire.

"A militia has taken over Lebanon and its imposing its political decisions. Nobody in the Arab world is saying this. This is the tragedy of the Arab world. We are talking about the rise of some countries in the Gulf, or some Arab countries, but we neglect half of Arab countries.

"Syria, Iraq... The economies of these countries have collapsed because of the militias and the fundamentalism.

"We are talking about the rise of some countries in the Gulf, or some Arab countries, but we neglect half of Arab countries.

"Can the rising Arab countries accomplish anything while more than half the Arab world is in a state of collapse in terms of their economy and politics and cannot manage to form governments, or there is more than one government, and there is internal division? Can we rise without Sudan, Libya, Lebanon, Syria, or Yemen? Can these countries achieve victory while they are in a state of internal collapse?

"We should not be ashamed to ask these questions loud and clear. Religious fundamentalism and militias have destroyed the Arab world and crushed it from the inside. This is a very dangerous situation.

"The situation today of the Hamas and religious fundamentalism dragging us into the latest war in Gaza is a very dangerous situation that will have an effect on the entire region."
