On his TV show, Egyptian TV host Amr Adeeb recently gave a monologue in which he condemned inter-Muslim fighting. "What kind of religion is this?" he asked with incredulity. "If the Prophet Muhammad could return today and watch us, he would cry!" Speaking a day after talking to Yazidi woman Nadia Murad, who had been held captive by ISIS in Iraq, Adeeb said that what ISIS was doing to the Yazidi community and what was happening in Muslim countries today was not Islam. "What we have in London and Switzerland is Islam," he said.
Following are excerpts from the address, which aired on Al-Yaum TV and was posted on the Internet on December 27, 2015.
Amr Adeeb: I went to Gaza twice after the Israeli raid. I saw tragedies, the schools that were hit with napalm, and the children who were burnt. This is a tragedy, of course, but I have always felt that this is the kind of thing done by an unjust enemy. The strange thing, however, is that we are doing it to ourselves. The novelty in this Arab war, or Islamic war, is that no one is fighting us. Many people do not realize this. No one is fighting us – the Americans did not attack us, and nor did the Russians, the Israelis, the occupation, or global Imperialism. No, no, no, no, no. We are doing it to one another. In Syria, we are the ones who are ruining one another, and the same goes for Iraq, Libya, and even in Egypt, albeit to a different extent. Why are we killing one another? Over what? If you ask people, they tell you that we are doing it to glorify Islam. Can Islam be glorified by our killing of Muslims?! By the way, if we examine our history… I don't want to say that it began with the four righteous caliphs, so let's say from their time and onward – we have always been killing one another.

We have been killing one another for the past 1,400 years. I would like to understand the reason. Can anyone tell me what we gain from this?

Is there any religion in the world that claims that the path to Paradise is paved with bodies of women and children, and with oceans of blood? Conspiracies, you say? Fine. But we are being played in an unnatural way. People, there is not a single country in the Islamic world that is not at war.

What kind of religion is this? If the Prophet Muhammad could return today and watch us, he would cry! By Allah, he would cry!

The [Yazidi] girl told me yesterday how [ISIS] killed her entire village, while shouting: "Allah Akbar." Did God instruct us to do such things? Sheikh Al-Azhar could not look her straight in the face. He sat with her and said. "My daughter, this is not us. This is not Islam."Well, if in Syria, it is not Islam, in Iraq it is not Islam, in Yemen, it is not Islam, in Libya it is not Islam, it is not Islam, and in Gaza and Ramallah, it is not Islam – then where is Islam? In Turkey too, this is not Islam, in Afghanistan, this is not Islam, in Pakistan, this is not Islam, in South China, this is not Islam, in the Philippines, this is not Islam, so where is there Islam? Where? In London? In Switzerland? What we have in London and Switzerland is Islam. Respect for human beings is Islam. This is the religion of Allah.
