The following are excerpts from the response of Hizbullah Secretary-General Sheik Hassan Nasrallah's to the UN resolution calling for the withdrawal of Syrian forces from Lebanon:
Sheik Nassrallah: The UN Security Council is laughing at us, deriding us, and making a laughingstock out of us when it tells us, the Lebanese, "I, the Security Council, wish to reiterate my strong support for the regional security of Lebanon, its sovereignty and its political independence." What has the Security Council done to defend Lebanon's sovereignty, its well-being, its security, the Lebanese lands, skies, and waters in the face of Israel's frequent violations? Whoever says he is defending Lebanon's sovereignty must do so always and against everyone who violates this sovereignty, and attacks it. The Lebanese do not say that the Syrian forces should stay in Lebanon forever, but from where does the Security Council draw its incredible and certain data that the Lebanese desire a Syrian withdrawal from Lebanon in the short- or mid-term? Where do they get it from?
The demand that Lebanon disarm and dismantle the non-Lebanese militias aims at the plan to resettle the Palestinians in Lebanon, a plan which we Lebanese reject unanimously, as do the Palestinians in Lebanon.
We always related to France in a different manner, but today, I say with sorrow, that I advise France, out of a desire to keep on friendly terms and to preserve the friendship of Arabs and Muslims, to not repeat such mistakes, especially since Kofi Annan will present his report to the Security Council within 30 days.
