On September 2, 2023, MTV (Lebanon) aired a video announcing the launch of a campaign by the channel to decriminalize homosexuality in the Lebanese penal code, which makes "unnatural sexual intercourse" punishable by one year in prison. The campaign quickly sparked controversy throughout the country, and on a September 4, 2023 show posted on Spot Shot Online (Lebanon), Lebanese Sunni religious leader Dr. Hassan Moraib, who is the Deputy Inspector-General of Dar Al-Fatwa in Lebanon, issued a fatwa against the channel. He said that MTV has sold its soul to Satan, that Islamic law prohibits watching the channel, and that the channel is a worse "plague" than COVID-19.
It should be noted that MTV shared posts on its social media channels that Pope Francis has declared that homosexuality is not a crime, adding: "Yes to the abolition of Article 534 of the penal code that criminalizes homosexuality." It should also be noted that MTV stands for "Murr TV" and is in no way affiliated with the international music channel.

Hassan Moraib: "I consider MTV to be a plague, and people must beware of it. I am responsible for what I am saying. The Muslim society – both the Sunnis and the Shi'ites, I believe that the Shi'ites support me in this completely. We consider MTV to be a plague worse than the coronavirus, which people should beware of. MTV has sold its soul to Satan.

"It is haram to watch that channel. Moreover..."
Interviewer: "Are you issuing a fatwa now?"
Moraib: "Absolutely. I am issuing this fatwa by means of your show. I wrote it on my Twitter account and now I am saying it here. It is haram for any Muslim who pronounces that there is no god other than Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah to watch that channel from now on."
