Palestinian politician Nabil Abu Rudeineh, spokesman for President Mahmoud Abbas, said that the Palestinian Authority has not received any aid from Iran. He made these remarks in an interview that aired on Al-Jadeed TV (Lebanon) on May 16, 2021. Abu Rudeineh said that Iran should not transfer aid to Palestinians in a clandestine manner, referring to aid given to Hamas, but it should respect the PA's sovereignty and independence and transfer aid in a "legal and formal manner" through the "front door." He continued to say that no other country would accept that funds go to groups and political parties within it.
Nabil Abu Rudeineh: "We are not grateful to people who do not cooperate with us. We have not received a single penny from Iran or anyone else. Anyone who wants to support the Palestinian people – the address is the National Authority and the PLO, and they are welcome to provide their aid in a legal and formal manner, rather than in a clandestine manner that does not serve the higher Palestinian cause."
Interviewer: "So if Iran supports Hamas you do not consider this as support for the Palestinian people and their cause? The only passageway [for aid] is the Palestinian Authority?"
Abu Rudeineh: "Absolutely. You are 100% correct. Would the Lebanese state agree for funds to go to groups and political parties? Would the Syrian people agree that money... When [foreign] money was delivered in Syria, the country went up in flames, because these funds did not go to the Syrian government. Iraq has been destroyed because there are those who are meddling in the country. The bottom line is that there is Palestinian sovereignty and there is an independent state. We may be the only state with independent will in the whole region. At the end of the day, everybody should know that there is a clear address and a clear path, and anyone who supports Palestine is welcome to come in through the front door, which is the real national gateway."
