Following are excerpts from an interview with Mustafa Barghouti, president of the Union of Palestinian Medical Relief Committees, which aired on Abu Dhabi TV on September 20, 2010:
Mustafa Barghouti: I would like to talk about another problem, which has to do with the attempts by some countries or companies to dump their waste, if I may so, in the occupied Palestinian lands, in the form of aid. These include medicines that have expired, or are about to expire within a few months. They do this because they know that by sending us these medicines, they can reduce the taxes they pay, because they are supposedly giving “contributions.”
At the same time, they are saving the cost of disposing of these medicines, which they cannot sell and which will expire in a short while. This causes us great pollution, because getting rid of these medicines leads to dangerous pollution. Secondly, there is a danger that these outdated medicines will reach the market.
