The following is a scene from the Syrian-produced TV series Al-Shatat. Al-Shatat was first aired on Hizbullah's Al-Manar TV during the month of Ramadan 2003, and then on two Iranian channels during Ramadan 2004. Al-Mamnou' TV, a new Jordanian channel, is airing Al-Shatat during Ramadan 2005.
In this scence, Kastner and Eichmann meet and discuss the fate of Hungarian Jews.
Kastner: Mr. Eichmann, believe me that if we Zionists were not Jews, we would become Nazis. We would be the most devout and enthusiastic among the Nazis, because we have many things in common with you. I'm not talking about minor matters. Not at all. These are deep and genuine issues, and they can serve as a basis for cooperation.
Eichmann: You have things in common with us?
Kastner: Of course.
Eichmann: Like what?
Kastner: You Nazis consider the German people to be the only perfect people among the peoples of the world, and we Zionists believe that the Jews are the Chosen People. You maintain that the German people is superior to all other nations, and likewise, we maintain the superiority of the Jewish people.
Eichmann: I like this comparison. Go on.
Kastner: You Nazis consider the Nordic race to be one of the perfect peoples, of which the German people is the most perfect. Likewise, we believe that the Jews are a perfect people, of which the Zionists are the most perfect.
Eichmann: But we also maintain, as science has proven, that the Jewish people is the most contemptible.
Kastner: No problem. What matters is that our principles are similar.
Eichmann: All right, go on.
Kastner: You Nazis are against mixing with other peoples, and likewise, we are against the Jewish people mixing with any other nation. You Nazis preserve the purity of German blood, and consider the marriage of any German man or woman to a Jew to be treason. We try to follow this, and make all efforts to preserve the purity of Jewish blood.
Eichmann: Let's cut to the chase. What do you propose?
Kastner: I will tell you. You are surely aware that the number of Jews in Hungary – which you have already occupied – is 800,000. There is no way you can deport them to labor and death camps if they decide to resist. I am willing to convince the Hungarian Jews that you are transferring them to camps for professional training, although they are, in fact, detention camps. In exchange, you would perform a small service for us.
Eichmann: What service?
Kastner: Release 2,000 Jews in Germany and allow them to emigrate to the Promised Land.
Eichmann: And who might these 2,000 Jews be?
Kastner: They are among our best biological specimens.
Eichmann: If you want me to approve this deal, you must tell me everything about it.
Kastner: My friend, these are the wealthiest of Europe. When you occupied Czechoslovakia before the war, they smuggled their money into secret banks in Switzerland. That is, neither you nor we can benefit from these funds. But if you release them – in exchange for us helping you annihilate the Jews of Hungary – we will benefit from these funds, and you will benefit from the annihilation of the Hungarian Jews.
