In a January 1, 2025 interview on Alaan TV (UAE), Syria's new Minister of Justice, Shadi Al-Waisi, who was seen presiding over a 2015 execution of a woman accused of prostitution in a shari'a court, discussed the regime's plans to implement shari'a law in Syria. He emphasized that Muslims make up roughly 90% of the Syrian population, and the government will reflect the will and aspirations of the people. As a result, the implementation of shari'a will play a "major role" in the coming days. Al-Waisi explained that the shari'a will be implemented in line with the conviction that 90% of Syrians hold "at the heart of their beliefs." He concluded that the state will not impose anything on the people.
Interviewer: "In your first appearance following the fall of the Al-Assad regime, you talked about implementing the shari'a, [saying:] 'We pray that Allah helps us implement the shari'a.' Some people had reservations about this. What is the meaning of implementing the shari'a? Some people call for the coexistence with the Christians, but say that they must pay the jizya poll tax."

Shadi Al-Waisi: "Muslims make up about 90% of the Syrian people."
Interviewer: "Right."
Al-Waisi: "When we say that the parliament will be comprised by the people, it means that what the people want will be ratified by the parliament, and will reflect the aspirations of the people. Therefore, implementing the shari'a will play a major role in the coming days, with regard to the representatives of the Islamic shari'a. If 90% of the Syrians want to vote in favor of something that is at the heart of their convictions and beliefs, we say that this is the choice of the people, and it reflects what they want and believe."
Interviewer: "Right."
Al-Waisi: "The implementation of the shari'a will be in the framework of this notion. The state will not impose anything upon the people. This will not be the way we will sketch our future policy, inshallah."
