Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Al-Miqdad was recently involved in an altercation with a journalist over Hizbullah's involvement in Syria, with Al-Miqdad calling Hizbullah a "noble, honorable party" and insisting that Iran does not arm terrorist groups, while the journalist, for his part, interjected that Hizbullah and the forces of the Syrian regime were killing civilians.
Following are excerpts from the exchange, which aired on Orient News TV (via the Internet) on January 30, 2014.
Faisal Al-Miqdad: You know full well that Hizbullah is not a terrorist organization. It is a noble, honorable party...
Reporter: Which kills civilians....
Faisal Al-Miqdad: It does not kill civilians. You are the ones who kill civilians.
Reporter: Who?
Faisal Al-Miqdad: You, who carry these microphones, and who have been lying about Syria for three years. Let me emphasize that. I will not answer your questions.
Reporter: You mean that “fighting terrorism” does not include Hizbullah?
Faisal Al-Miqdad: Fighting terrorism should be within the internationally defined framework.
Reporter: Does that include Iran as well?
Faisal Al-Miqdad: Iran does not arm terrorist groups, whereas Saudi Arabia recruits terrorists and kills Syrians. It spills the blood of innocent people all over Syria.
Another reporter: What is your view about today's Turkish attack against ISIS?
Faisal Al-Miqdad: If this is true, we hope that it continues.
First reporter: Why are you bombing cities even when ISIS fighters are no longer there, but you don’t bomb them when those fighters are there?
Faisal Al-Miqdad: As you can see, I don’t carry bombs or anything.
Reporter: The forces of the regime that you represent bomb civilians.
Faisal Al-Miqdad: You are the ones who represent killing, immorality, and ignominy.
You are not real journalists.
