Syrian Jihadi Commander Zahran Alloush: We Will Not Let Democracy Be Imposed upon Syria

Zahran Alloush, military commander of the Islamic Front in Syria, said, in a recent Internet interview, that today's democracies were "the dictatorship of the strong" and that they would not allow democracy to be imposed upon them.

Following are excerpts from the interview, which was posted on the Internet on January 20, 2014.

Interviewer: Can you accept a civil, democratic, and pluralistic state, as agreed upon by the Syrian opposition factions, and stated in the National Consensus Charter?

Zahran Alloush: As I've said in the past, the democracy we see in the world today is the dictatorship of the strong. We do not believe that democracy equals justice. This is an illusion.

Interviewer: Do you accept it or not?

Zahran Alloush: We refuse to have the supra-constitutional principle of democracy imposed upon us.

Interviewer: Will you impose an Islamic state in Syria by force, like ISIS tried to do?

Zahran Alloush: We know, from the people of our country, that the Muslims dream of the blessing of a life of justice under Islam. The state that we strive to establish will emerge from the will of our people, who want the Koran and the Sunna.

Interviewer: I would like you to give me a straight answer: Will you impose this state upon the people by means of weapons?

Zahran Alloush: Let me tell you that your question is all wrong. You cannot "impose" upon the people something that they already want. If you want to drink water, can I "force" you to do so? That question is all wrong.

Our nation has a great thirst for an Islamic state, in which justice prevails, as in the glorious days of the early Muslims.
