Following are excerpts from an interview with Abdallah Menayni, head of an umbrella organization of young members of political parties in Syria. The interview aired on Al-Manar TV on August 6, 2009.
Abdallah Menayni: Negotiations, peace, international law, and so on will not restore our land. The only thing that will restore our land is the blood of the martyrs, which has been planted in this land and needs to be irrigated with more blood, until we liberate every inch of our land and the land of our nation. We must know this and complete believe in this.

Ever since 1920 [the Battle of Maysaloun], the blood of the martyrs has been the only way to liberate this land, and the French were driven out just like the Jews will be driven out of our land. This culture [of martyrdom] is a culture of the past, the present, and the future. It is not a literary culture, but rather, a culture of life, of deeds, and of liberation. As a young Arab, I fully believe that this land can only be liberated through resistance and the blood of the martyrs.
