Islamic State (ISIS) Supporters Discuss How To Donate Cryptocurrency Without Being Detected By Authorities

July 14, 2023

On July 13, 2023, two users of the Rocket.Chat server operated by the Islamic State (ISIS) discussed in English how to send donations to the group using cryptocurrency without being detected by law enforcement.

One user posted a question in a general discussion chat room, asking how one might make send funds to ISIS leadership using Monero, a cryptocurrency which uses a blockchain with privacy-enhancing technologies to obfuscate transactions and achieve anonymity.

The user also asked how to make a transaction using Monero without being "tracked" by authorities. He asked those who wish to respond to his questions to message him or talk to him using Session, a private messaging app that protects user metadata, encrypts communications, and ensures that messaging activities leave no digital trail.

Directly responding on the same ISIS-operated chat group, another user provided some tips for using Monero, including the use of an online cryptocurrency exchange service and a VPN or Tor browser.
