Yemeni Ansar Allah Movement (Houthis) Claims Drone Attacks On U.S. Military Vessels, Israel

December 17, 2024

In December 10 and 13, 2024, Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi Ansar Allah movement (the Houthis) claimed responsibility for a drone and missile attack on three ''American supply ships'' and two ''American destroyers that escorted them'' in the Gulf of Aden. The Houthis also claimed that they had carried out five drone attacks on various targets in Israeli territory. The most recent Houthi statement, which claimed responsibility for attacking ''vital targets'' in southern Israel, declared that the attack was carried out jointly with the Islamic Resistance in Iraq group, although the latter did not confirm its involvement.

It is notable that the attack on the American ships was the second of its kind since the beginning of the month. According to the Houthis, it was preceded by a similar operation targeting the same vessels on December 1, 2024, in the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Aden. Furthermore, the alleged attack perpetrated with the Islamic Resistance is the third such claim by the Houthis this month of a joint attack with this group. The Houthis contend that the most-recent attack, that they say was carried out with the Islamic State in Iraq, took place on December 8 and comprised a drone attack on ''a vital target'' in southern Israel. The movement announced that this followed the first joint operation on December 3, which involved three drone attacks on targets in both the south and the north of Israel in conjunction with the Islamic Resistance in Iraq.
