Fatah spokesman Jamal Nazzal said in a June 3, 2024 interview with Al-Arabiya Network (Saudi Arabia) that Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei needed the October 7 attack in order to deflect the Israeli attention from Iran. He said that Iran uses its Palestinian proxies, Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, for this purpose of distracting Israel so it would not deal with Iran. Nazzal stated that the purpose of Fatah’s 50-year armed struggle was not to erase Israel, but to bring Israel to the table and negotiate a state within the 1967 borders.
Jamal Nazzal: "[Khamenei] said that the region was in need of something like October 7, but he did not really mean the region. He means Iran. He believes that Iran needed October 7 and all its ensuing consequences, because he knows that Israel would have focused on Iran, if it were not kept busy by the Palestinians. He is using the Palestinians, and the Arabs in general, as a shield against hypothetical Israeli arrows. He is using the Palestinians and Arabs as fodder for the Israeli cannons, in order to prevent this catastrophe from reaching Iran.

"Iran uses the Palestinian people as a shield against any harm from Israel. We know that Israel is lying in wait for Iran. There is only one source of aggression against Iran, and that is Israel. However, Iran is using Palestinian proxies, like Hamas and the Islamic Jihad, in order to keep Israel busy. When Iran wants to harm Israel, it uses it Palestinian proxies. It uses us to fend Israel off.

"[Khamenei] said that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict cannot be resolved peacefully. This is [foreign] interference. What does it mean to say that there is no peaceful solution? What has the goal of Fatah's armed struggle been for over 50 years? Was the goal to erase Israel? Has any Palestinian faction inside Palestine managed to confront Israel in a way that erases its existence? This was not possible and has not been the goal. The goal was to liberate Palestine and obtain and independent Palestinian state, by bringing both sides to the negotiations table, where both sides could agree on a compromise: a Palestinian state in the 1967 borders.

"This conflict will not be resolves solely by military means. It will be resolved by pushing Israel into a corner, where it will have no choice but to negotiate with us, and reach a peaceful compromise solution, based on Palestinian independence. We see that after eight months of fighting, Hamas are ready to accept anything just so they can have a ceasefire."
