Seyyed Hadi Seyyed Afghahi, a former Iranian diplomat, said in an April 16, 2020 interview on Al-Jazeera Network (Qatar) that the U.S. has over 50 military bases and installations in the Persian Gulf region, in addition to aircraft carriers, and that these facilities and the over 150,000 U.S. service members that they house constitute targets for Iran’s precision missiles. He added: "If there are more than 50 coffins with dead Americans in them, the American people will revolt."
Seyyed Hadi Seyyed Afghahi: "The U.S. has over 50 bases in the region - Air Force, Army, Navy, Marines... There are also [bases dedicated] to electronic warfare. I do not have the time to list all the bases the U.S. has in the Gulf states, as well as the aircraft carriers it has in the waters of the Persian Gulf..."
Interviewer: "This means that America has the upper hand, Mr. Afghahi. It has claws, bases, and huge arsenals. What will you gain by harassing the [Americans]?"
Afghahi: "Please let me finish so I can complete my idea. If I fail to answer you, you may ask again. What I mean is that because of this widespread deployment... As you have said, it constitutes a force on the ground and in the air, but at the same time, these forces constitute targets for our precision missiles. Over 150,000 of their soldiers are deployed in the region and they will become targets. You know full well, and so do we, that if there are more than 50 coffins with dead Americans in them, the American people will revolt."
