Hassan Khomeini, grandson of the leader of the Iranian Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, said in an October 5, 2024 interview on Channel 1 (Iran) that Israel will not back down unless it is faced with force and power, therefore, he suggested that it is time to increase Iran's military deterrence. He said that Iran's solution for a Palestinian state is a referendum with the participation of the Palestinian refugees, and this will "ultimately wipe out Israel."

Hassan Khomeini: "The Islamic Republic of Iran's solution for a Palestinian state is a referendum. Whoever gets the most votes wins. This will ultimately wipe out Israel, and they know it. If the majority of the people vote, they [Israelis] will not be able to govern. Therefore, they do not accept the return of the refugees. Historically, when they consider the two-state solution... Every time that the Americans, English, and Israelis mention it – even though the Israelis get very angry about it – they try to make the world accept the legitimacy of the Israeli regime.

"It is wrong to think that if we leave Israel alone, it would leave us alone

[...]

"Israel will not back down from anything, unless it is faced with force and power.

[...]

"Deterrence is mainly based on power. Deterrence does not come with a smile. I personally support any kind of negotiations, but know this: Any flexibility must have force behind it.

[...]

"In my opinion, it is time to level up our military deterrence. We have to increase the level of our military deterrence. Today, the situation dictates that we strengthen our deterrence."
