Iranian political analyst Mosaddeq Mosaddeqpour said in a January 6, 2025 appearance on Sky New Arabia (UAE) that Iran's investment in proxies was a mistake. He said that Iran cannot win in a military battle with America and the West, but rather it should fight them economically by closing the Strait of Hormuz and Bab Al-Mandab, blocking international sea trade.
Mosaddeq Mosaddeqpour: "In my view, Iran's investment in [the Resistance Axis] was a mistake. Iran should not have done this. It founded the resistance axis, and supported groups that oppose to Israel, within the framework of one common goal. There may have been tensions between Iran and the governments of the countries of the Resistance [Axis]. This may have also encouraged some extremist, fundamentalist, principalist groups in Iran to go along with this plan, but this was not the policy of Iran. I believe that if Iran confronts Israel in the future, it has many means other than these proxies. Iran should not rely on proxies within other countries, where the governments have taken a different approach."
Interviewer: "What other means does Iran have?"
Mosaddeqpour: "The Strait of Hormuz is the largest means at Iran's disposal. Iran can and must change the nature of its battle with America and the West. Today, they are fighting Iran economically, and Iran is trying to fight them by military and security means, but it cannot. This achieves nothing for Iran. Economically, Iran has the Strait of Hormuz and even Bab Al-Mandab Strait. It can rely on these straits to strangle the [West] economically. I believe that Iran will do so. It will resort to using this card. This is the policy of Iran. The Red Sea is important for the whole world."
