Ayatollah Mohammad Mehdi Mirbagheri, a member of Iran's Assembly of Experts, said in a May 8, 2020 interview with Iranian filmmaker Nader Talebzadeh that aired on Ofogh TV (Iran) that Iran has been working in the shadows to expand its regional power. Adding that Iran can play an active role as the West's civilizational enemy, Ayatollah Mirbagheri said that Iran distrusts the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Trade Organization (WTO), and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and that these international organizations cannot be trusted and should be held accountable for their actions. He added that large corporations and super wealthy people are behind the coronavirus conspiracy.
Ayatollah Mehdi Mirbagheri: "In the diplomatic conflict that took place, we [worked] in the shadows to expand our regional power. By the grace of God, the resistance front... Actually, that's not the right way to put it. I should call it our 'regional cooperation.' We expanded our regional cooperation. In the Islamic front, words such as 'influence,' 'domination,' 'control,' and 'colonialism' have no meaning whatsoever. If we are going somewhere, then we must serve, assist, and protect the oppressed. With this in hand, we tried to [work] hand-in-hand with the resistance front and to cooperate and help as much as we can. You saw that something important happened behind the scenes that influenced the regional and global balance. We are the West's civilizational rival, and we can play an active role.

"To the same extent that we trust our senior officials and our medical community - and we are sure that a vast majority of them are God-fearing people of faith who love their people and their country... To the same extent that we are certain that they want the best for us, we are suspicious of the global systems, particularly those that have to do with economics and health. This is, to the same extent that we are suspicious of the WTO and the IMF, which is causing the bankruptcy of many countries in the Third World... To the same extent, we are suspicious of the WHO. They run with the hare and hunt with the hounds at the same time. They cannot be trusted at all. They have been accused of creating large epidemics in Africa. They have been accused of establishing human labs in Africa. If one day, a court were established... The other day, I suggested that if we could have established international courts for the sake of the oppressed, and if we could have established an international mechanism to hold [these global organizations] accountable, then the real course of events would have become evident.
