Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei: We May Develop a Usable COVID-19 Vaccine Before Others Do; If We Can Launch Satellites into Orbit, Then We Should Be Able to Develop Cars That Get 47 MPG

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said in a May 6, 2020 address that aired on Channel 1 (Iran) that if Iran has shown that it is able to produce a satellite carrier that travels at speeds of 7,500 m/s and launches a satellite into the desired orbit, then it should also be able to eventually develop other things, such as a satellite carrier that can launch a satellite into orbit at an altitude of 36,000 kilometers, or cars with a fuel efficiency of 5L/km (roughly 47 U.S. MPG). In addition, he said that Iran's researchers should focus on developing vaccines for COVID-19 and other diseases. He added: "It is not impossible [for us to] reach a usable vaccine before the others do."

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei: "If we can produce a satellite carrier of such quality, that can travel at a speed of 7,500 meters per second – that's 7.5 kilometers per second... If we can do such a thing and place our satellite in the desired orbit, then we should have the ability to do many other things. He who produces this satellite carrier and brings the satellite to space – the same man, the same intent, the same hand will be able, in time, to bring a satellite into orbit at a 36,000-kilometer altitude. This is the desired orbit.

"I we make such a great step in the military field, or in the field of satellite launching, why can't we produce a vehicle with a fuel consumption of 5 liters per 100 kilometers? Why do we have to stop with vehicles that consumer 12, 10, or 8 liters [per 100 kilometers]?

[...]

"According to the propaganda of the [outside] world, there cannot be a [COVID-19] vaccine in the next years, six months, or whatever. This is not certain. Our good scientists, our young scientists, our efficient researchers should focus on a coronavirus vaccine and on vaccines for other things. It is not impossible that they will reach a usable vaccine before the others do."
