Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei said in a July 31, 2020 address that aired on Channel 1 (Iran) that negotiations with America would require Iran to either render itself defenseless by ceasing its missile programs, or to settle for the status quo of conflicts, sanctions, and threats. He said that U.S. President Donald Trump, who he referred to as an "old geezer," wants to use negotiations with Iran for his own personal gain, that Trump wants Iran to give up on its defensive and national capabilities, and that no honorable person would yield to such things.
Ali Khamenei: "I ask everyone to pay attention to this next point. Of course, I have said this many times, but it appears I have to say it again, because some people don't understand, or they pretend to not understand. The fact that the enemy [America] is asking us to negotiate means one thing. [They want to say:] 'Come sit at the negotiations table. You cannot build missiles, and you must accept that. If you accept it, you're done for, because you will have rendered yourselves defenseless. If you don't accept it – the status quo of conflict, sanctions, and threats will remain.' This is the meaning of negotiations. This is why I say that we shouldn't negotiate with America. Naturally, [Trump] would benefit from negotiations – that old geezer who is running America. He would benefit from it just like he exploited the negotiations with North Korea for his propaganda. Whether it has to do with the elections or with something unrelated, he wants to use [the negotiations] for his personal goals. In addition, America's political regime is targeting issues that are very important to the Islamic Republic of Iran. He wants us to give up on our defensive capabilities, on our regional strength, and on our national strength. This is impossible. Any honorable person who wants to safeguard the nation's interests would never yield to these things."
