Lebanese Archbishop George Saliba On Iranian TV: The Jews Killed Jesus Christ And Stoned The Prophets; We Opposed The Vatican's Decision To Absolve Them

Theophilus George Saliba, the Syriac Orthodox Archbishop of Mount Lebanon said in a February 2, 2022 interview on Al-Alam TV (Iran) that the Jews killed Jesus Christ and the prophets who had been sent to them, and that he views them as an enemy. Citing a Biblical verse, he said that he had opposed to Vatican's decision to "absolve the Jews." He added: "I am completely convinced that these Jews have committed a crime against Jesus Christ and the Church."

George Saliba: "The Jews killed Jesus Christ. I am not saying this out of vengefulness. This is the truth."

Interviewer: "You view them as enemies, regardless of Zionism or whoever is behind it."

Saliba: "Of course. We, as Christians, are not hostile toward anyone. But [the Jews] killed... Jesus Christ said: 'O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! Behold your house is left unto you desolate.'"

Interviewer: "Right."

Saliba: "This was not ascribed to Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ said this himself. Therefore, we, as Christians, have a certain stance regarding the Jews. When 40 or 45 years ago the Vatican decided to absolve the Jews for killing prophets, stoning those who were sent to them, and crucifying Jesus Christ we did not agree with the Vatican. As I always say, this is the opinion of the Catholic Church. They are free to think so. But they do not represent our opinion about the Jews and or the Zionist movement. This has to do with politics. I do not interfere in politics, but I am completely convinced that these Jews have committed a crime against Jesus Christ and against the Church."
