Nikolai Starikov, chairman of the pro-Kremlin Great Motherland Party, which will be running in the late 2016 parliamentary elections, said in a recent Sunday evening talk show that the long-term U.S. strategy is "to conduct changes in the highest political echelons of the Russian authorities" and that the Americans are taking practical steps to achieve this goal. The show aired on the Russia 1 federal TV channel on June 19, 2016.

Nikolai Starikov: The United States sets as its strategic goal to conduct changes in the highest political echelons of the Russian authorities. They plan to implement those changes in 2018, before and during [our] elections. So everything that is happening in Russian and international politics now should be viewed through this prism. So what are the Americans doing? First, they are imposing economic sanctions, which should worsen the economic situation within the country. Will they lift the sanctions before [our] presidential elections? Definitely not.

Second, they are exerting pressure all over, including - as a new factor - pressure in sports. The Americans are making problems, in order to sell the solution later at a high price, as they generally do. They are pushing the Russian elites and voters to one simple notion: that all the problems you face today are because the country is led by Vladimir Valdimirovich Putin. Change the president's last name, and all the problems will dissipate by themselves.
