The following are excerpts from an interview with Syrian researcher Nabil Fayyadh on Al-Jazeera TV that aired on January 5, 2005:
Fayyadh: Israel is a occupying country, I realize that. But how can I explain how Yasser Arafat's fortune after his death is estimated at $4.2 billion, while the Palestinian people starve to death? How can I explain that Ahmed Qurei, for instance, indirectly funds the building of the separation fence built by the Sharon government? I understand that this is an occupying government that has a conflict with the Palestinian people. I realize that. I don't justify it, but I understand it. But how can I understand that the Palestinian people in Gaza, the West Bank, and everywhere is starving to death while Mrs. Suha Arafat is living off of her husband's millions traveling from one place to another?
