Following are excerpts from a TV report on the supposed Lebanese roots of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. The report aired on Al-Jadid/New TV on February 6, 2011.
Reporter: According to exclusive information that we have obtained, President Muhammad Hosni Mubarak is not Egyptian. Rather, he is of Lebanese origin, coming from the town of Rayfoun. A team from our show went to that town.
Rayfoun is a town in the district of Kasrowan. It's said that a relative of this Lebanese Egyptian president lives here. Our team managed to reach the palace of the Mubarak family in this town, but the people living there denied the story.
Woman: It's inconceivable that the president of the Republic of Egypt is from Rayfoun.
Reporter: However, some people from Rayfoun told us a story, which is passed by word of mouth, according to which the Egyptian president has roots in the village.
Resident: Mubarak's father was a monk, living in a monastery. He got into a dispute, left the monastery, and moved to Egypt. he converted to Islam. He married an Egyptian, and became Sunni.
Another resident: He got married...
First resident: He got married, and Hosni Mubarak was born. His aunt died about twenty years ago.
Another resident: I forget his name.
First resident: His aunt was the mother of...
Another resident: I think so.
First resident: This was her home. I can tell you that she was Hosni Mubarak's aunt.

Resident: We've known this for a long while. His origins are from Rayfoun. His ancestors are from Rayfoun, I'm telling you.
Another resident, by phone: Brothers, the father of Hosni Mubarak had two or three brothers. One of them converted to Islam and moved to Egypt. But I don't want them to kill us because of this information. That's what the elders say. it's been passed down from father to son that his roots are in Rayfoun.
